Bayern Munich might have to get involved in a bidding war to sign Kai Havertz from Bayer Leverkusen next summer.

The summer transfer window was significant for Bayern Munich. They started rebuilding the spine of the squad by signing top young talents and releasing the senior star players. The idea was right for Bayern, but the execution was not appropriate as they failed to land their first-choice transfer targets.

Bayern will be expected to splurge big next summer to continue this rebuild. It will take at least one more summer to complete this overhaul and assemble a squad that can compete for silverware in the present and future.

Kai Havertz is reportedly a prime transfer target for Die Roten next summer. The German attacking midfielder has been heavily linked with a move to Bavaria this year. However, Havertz decided to stay at Leverkusen for one more season.

According to Kicker (via AZ), signing Havertz will not be straightforward for Bayern next summer. The Bavarians are set to face competition from numerous European clubs for this transfer. This report also suggests that Borussia Dortmund will be ready to spend close to €100 million on Havertz if they Jadon Sancho leave the club next summer.

More from Bayern Strikes

Havertz enjoyed a prolific 2018/19 campaign with Bayer Leverkusen. He managed to score 20 goals and created six goals across all competitions. Joachim Low rewarded Havertz’s consistent performances by handing him his first appearance for German national team last year.

The German midfielder has steadily improved since making debut for Leverkusen in 2016. Havertz is considered as the best German talent of his generation. He has started this campaign quietly by his standards, scoring two goals in seven appearances. However, this will unlikely deter top European clubs from making a move for him next summer.

Bayern will be ideally looking at Havertz as the long term replacement of Thomas Muller. The German forward is on steady decline and will turn 31 next season. His contract at Bayern is set to expire in 2021. It will be huge surprise if Die Roten hands him a long contract at this point in his career.

Apart from Muller’s future, Philippe Coutinho’s performances this season will decide whether Bayern will go full throttle for Havertz next year. Die Roten still regret not signing Leroy Sane from Schalke in 2016, so they will be desperate to not lose out on another young German talent. It will be interesting to see whether they are ready to get involved in a bidding war the German forward.
