Karl-Heinz Rummenigge is “confident” Bayern Munich will activate their option to make James Rodriguez‘s move from Real Madrid permanent this summer.

James Rodriguez has endured mixed fortunes since joining Bayern Munich on loan from Real Madrid in the summer of 2017. The Colombian playmaker is undoubtedly talented, but he has still found it hard to impose himself as an undisputed starter in Bavaria.

He was a stalwart for most of last season under Jupp Heynckes, after spending the first few months of his career in Germany injured. James ended his first season at Bayern with eight goals and 14 assists in all competitions — seven goals and 11 assists came from his 23 Bundesliga appearances.

This season hasn’t been quite so successful for the 2014 World Cup breakout star. James spent the majority of the first half of the season sidelined with injury, and he has failed to reach the heights of his last campaign since returning to the squad. He has just three goals and six assists across 20 total appearances.

More from Bayern Strikes

There has been much talk regarding James’ uncertain future. Bayern have the option to make his move from Real Madrid permanent for a rumored sum of €42 million — hardly a big fee in today’s market. Some outlets have suggested the Bavarians are not totally convinced by the player, while others claim he is pining for a return to Madrid.

Bayern Munich CEO Karl-Heinz Rummenigge has perhaps silenced some of those claims with his recent comments, however. Speaking with AZ, Rummenigge admitted his admiration for the Colombian superstar, claiming that he is “confident” James will still be in Munich next season.

"“I’m a big fan of James. He has an excellent left foot and is a world star. We have until June 15th to pull our option to buy him. But I have to say, everyone is happy with him, and I am confident that James will be playing at Bayern again next season."

Kalle further added that he doesn’t believe there is any sort of rift between James and Bayern coach Niko Kovac. He believes the Croatian recognizes the quality of his number 11.

At this point it’s really hard to tell what lies in store for James Rodriguez this summer. The player has reaffirmed his loyalty to Bayern on several occasions, but he has also continuously expressed his admiration for Real Madrid.

Bayern’s executives have always said, meanwhile, that they won’t be making any decisions until the end of the season, so it’s unlikely we find out any solid information til then.
