Bayern Munich focused on departures in the goalkeeping department this summer. They managed to recoup reasonable fees for Daniel Peretz and Alexander Nubel. Both players had spent last season on loan.

The defending Bundesliga champions didn’t have to sign any replacements as they had sorted the futures of Manuel Neuer and Sven Ulreich at the end of the season. Both senior goalkeepers signed a one-year contract extension with Bayern. Meanwhile, Urbig remains part of the club’s long-term plans in this position.

There was significant speculation around the future of Neuer as he postponed contract talks during the second half of the season. There were suggestions in the German media that he would hang up his boots at the end of the season. However, Neuer decided to continue for one more year.

Courtesy of his good form at the club level, Neuer came out of retirement for Germany and played at the World Cup in the summer. He has looked fit in the pre-season games. While talking to Magenta TV (via iMiaSanMia), Bayern head coach Vincent Kompany reiterated that Manuel Neuer will be the team’s number one next season. The Belgian insisted that Urbig will get adequate playing time next season, but Neuer remains the main goalkeeper for the team.

"We communicated with Manu and with Jonas very clearly internally. That's the most important thing. Jonas will get his minutes again this season. That's part of his development and hopefully his future with us. But Manu is our #1, that's very clear. We're happy with this situation."

Bayern should give more game time to Urbig this season

Vincent Kompany is backing Manuel Neuer to continue his good run of form. However, Bayern will miss a trick if they don’t gradually increase game time for Jonas Urbig. The 2026/27 season is an ideal time for the transition to take place in goal. Neuer has hinted at retiring from club football at the end of next season, so having Urbig share a considerable amount of game time will ensure that the transition is smoothly handled.

Jonas Urbig did well last season whenever he stepped into the goal. The 23-year-old made 17 appearances for Bayern last season across all competitions. Courtesy of Neuer’s fitness issues, Urbig played in 14 league games last season. In an ideal scenario, Urbig gets to start at least 15 Bundesliga games in the upcoming campaign to continue his development.

It will be interesting to see how the game time gets shared between these two goalkeepers if Neuer ends up confirming his retirement midway through the season. For now, Urbig will have to bide his time to become a regular player in Die Roten’s strongest starting XI.
