Bayern look calm when things are not going their way on the pitch

The record Bundesliga champions often looked flustered last season when opposition was dominating the tempo of the game. They ended up capitulating in several away games when the momentum was with the opposition.

Things have changed in this regard under Kompany. Bayern look calmer this season in possession. They do not want to force the initiative and overcommit when the opposition is trying to gain the upper hand. Kompany has made the team much more secure in possession.

Bayern are currently averaging 65% possession this season, considerably more than last campaign (59%). Joshua Kimmich and Aleksandar Pavlovic ooze calmness on the ball in the center of the park, which eventually reflects on the change in approach at Bayern under Kompany. Even when they go down, there is no sense of panic as they stick to the tactical plan and try to concede fewer chances by retaining the possession.

Bigger tests await Bayern, but the performance against Aston Villa at Villa Park before the international break does suggest Kompany’s men will not crumble in front of a hostile atmosphere and calmly execute the gameplan. It is going to be fascinating to see how Bayern will perform in the knockout games of the Champions League. (Possession Stats from Bundesliga.com)
