With the Champions League ending on Saturday, it is a good time to debate about who will be in contention for the Ballon d’Or for this season. Paris Saint-Germain have several contenders for this trophy as they defended their Champions League title and won the Ligue 1. Bayern Munich will also have a few players in the race for this individual award.
The Bavarian club has enjoyed a successful season. They continued their dominance in Germany, winning the Bundesliga and DFB Pokal. Bayern also came very close to winning the treble as they suffered a narrow 6-5 defeat against Paris Saint-Germain.
Bayern played an entertaining brand of football. Harry Kane, Michael Olise, and Luis Diaz have been in sensational form throughout the season. There is a good chance all three players feature in the top 25 for the Ballon d’Or.
Former Bayern forward Thomas Müller has given his opinion on who can compete from the current squad for the Ballon d’Or. While talking to SportBild (via iMiaSanMia), Muller insisted that Olise has the slight edge over Kane in the race for this prestigious award.
"With his finishing and attacking qualities, Harry is the best striker I currently see. He's got a wide range of qualities, but he's not a player who can dribble past four people. As far as the Ballon d'Or is concerned, the 'artistic element' is taken into account. Generally, I see Harry as the more important player - but when it comes to the vote for the World's Best Player, it's more for players like Michael, with this dance-like, artistic, ease, magic quality, you can't learn that. Michael is a player who delivers, a performer. "Thomas Muller
Kane and Olise have been very productive in the final third this season. The English forward has been prolific in all competitions, scoring 61 goals. Kane has overall managed to score 72 goals for club and country this season. Kane also has eight assists to his name this campaign.
The England international will definitely win the award for best striker at the Ballon d’Or ceremony later this year since no player has scored more goals than him this season across the top five leagues.
Meanwhile, Olise has been the creative hub for Bayern. The French forward has provided 25 assists across all competitions. Olise has also scored 25 goals for Die Roten this season.
World Cup will have a big say on the Ballon D’or
The World Cup also changes things for players in the race for this award. Kane and Olise can strengthen their case by helping their countries go far in the competition.
Muller does have a strong case for Olise, but Kane does have strong numbers that can make him a favourite for this trophy.
The Bavarian faithful will hope that the team continues to do well on the pitch, as individual awards will come along the way if the club continues to win trophies on a consistent basis. Winning the treble is a priority for Bayern next season.
