Thanksgiving Transfers: Bayern Munich’s best bargain signings in 21st century
Robert Lewandowski
Bayern Munich sent shockwaves through the Bundesliga when they managed to beat competition from top clubs across the globe for the signing of Robert Lewandowski from Borussia Dortmund in 2014. It was an incredible signing since Lewandowski was one of the prolific goal-scorers in Europe at that time, and he was entering the prime years of his career.
Lewandowski’s goalscoring exploits at Bayern alone made it an incredible signing, but because he joined as a free agent, this deal was one of the best transfers in the history of football.
The Polish striker scored a whopping 344 goals in 375 appearances for Bayern across all competitions. Lewandowski won every possible trophy in Munich, including the historic treble under Hansi Flick in 2015. The deal to bring Lewandowski to Munich looked more insane as years went by. He was unfortunate to miss out on the Ballon d’Or during his time in Munich since he thoroughly deserved it in 2020.
Bayern ended up making a profit on Lewandowski when they sold him to FC Barcelona in 2022. The Polish striker left Bayern after eight seasons. Bayern got close to €50 million for 33-year-old Lewandowski. He is excelling under Hansi Flick at Barcelona this season.
Considering the optics of the transfer and impact on the pitch, the Bavarian faithful will be eternally thankful to the club’s board for signing Lewandowski from arch-rivals Borussia Dortmund ten years ago. (Stats courtesy: Transfermarkt)
