Josip Stanisic making a strong case to become first choice right-back

Right-back has been a problem position for Bayern over the last couple of seasons. Konrad Laimer has done a fine job of filling in, but he often lacks the impetus needed in the final third. Meanwhile, Sacha Boey has struggled with injuries since arriving from Galatasaray in January 2025.

In such a situation, the game against Union Berlin has given Kompany a strong candidate for the right-back position. Josip Stanisic started on the right side of the back four on Saturday. The Croatian was one of the best players on the pitch for the visitors. He did a fine job defensively and showed great intent in contributing at the other end of the pitch.

Stanisic was tidy on the ball, completing 93% of the passes he attempted. The Croat also made five recoveries and won a majority of the defensive duels he contested. Stanisic also provided the assist for Bayern’s solitary goal in Berlin. If he stays away from injury, Bayern will have a long-term solution for the right-back position.
