Bayern Munich could see significant changes in the goalkeeping department next season. The Bavarian club is waiting for Manuel Neuer to make a decision on his long-term future. The veteran goalkeeper will turn 40 on Friday. He will reveal his plan for next season in the coming weeks.
Jonas Urbig is expected to stay at Bayern. He is the first-choice option for Bayern to replace Neuer in the long run. The former Koln goalkeeper has done well to replace Neuer over the last few weeks. His good performances for Die Roten have earned him a call-up to the German national team.
Sven Ulreich has been the number three in the goalkeeping department. He got his first appearance of the season against Bayer Leverkusen a couple of weeks ago when Urbig and Neuer were on the sidelines due to injuries.
Ulreich ended up getting injured at the end of the game. However, he is confident about contributing to Bayern’s success for one more season. While talking to the media a few days ago (via iMiaSanMia), Ulreich opened the door to another contract extension.
"I can easily imagine playing another year. The role I have in the goalkeeping team suits me, and I'm enjoying it. But it's not solely my decision. Others [the people in charge] have a bit more influence."Sven Ulreich
The 37-year-old goalkeeper has been a fine player for Bayern over his two spells. He has done brilliantly to be a deputy to Neuer. He is a leader in the dressing room. It is a no-brainer for Die Roten to keep him as a number three for another season. His experience in the goalkeeping department will be even more crucial if Neuer decides to hang up his boots.
Bayern could raise funds from goalkeeping department
Die Roten will not have to sign a new goalkeeper in the summer if Neuer decides to play for one more season. With Urbig and Ulreich alongside Neuer, Die Roten have a solid goalkeeping department for the 2026/27 campaign.
The Bavarian club could raise funds by parting ways with Daniel Peretz and Alexander Nubel. Peretz is currently on loan at Southampton. He had joined Hamburg in the summer, but a lack of game time ensured Die Roten looked for a new club in January. Southampton have secured an option to buy Peretz. Even if Southampton don’t activate this option, Peretz is expected to leave Munich on a permanent deal in the summer.
Meanwhile, Nubel will return to Bavaria after spending the last three seasons on loan at VfB Stuttgart. The former Schalke goalkeeper wants a permanent transfer if Bayern cannot give him the opportunity to replace Neuer in the long run.
