Xabi Alonso believes that Bayer Leverkusen's historic title win is beneficial for the Bundesliga as a whole, after they ended Bayern Munich's 11-year reign at the top.

Bayer Leverkusen finally knocked Bayern Munich off the top of the Bundesliga perch on Sunday, as they clinched the Meisterschale with a 5-0 win over Werder Bremen. Die Werkself, who have yet to lose a game this season, put an end to Bayern's run of winning 11 straight Bundesliga titles.

The Bundesliga title triumph caps off an incredible season for Bayer Leverkusen, masterminded by former Bayern Munich midfielder Xabi Alonso. And the 42 year old believes that a team other than Bayern winning the Bundesliga is good for German football as a whole.

"It is beneficial for the Bundesliga and German football that another team won the Bundesliga," Alonso told DAZN. "We have to enjoy it now and need some time to let it sink in. It's a great moment. We'll see what happens in the future, but now is a moment to celebrate. This is my first season as a coach and the feeling is incredible. It's special to win the Bundesliga for the first time in Leverkusen's history after 120 years. It's a great honour to be a part of it."

Alonso, who was heavily linked with the Bayern Munich head coach job, has already announced that he will be staying at Bayer Leverkusen next season. The Bavarians will be desperate to regain their Bundesliga crown after losing it for the first time in 11 years. And the two clubs could be set for a fascinating title battle in the coming campaign.
