Is Dayot Upamecano reliable defender in Kompany’s system?

Without wanting to single out Dayot Upamecano, he failed to deal with Marmoush on the break for Frankurt’s second goal. The Egyptian attacker broke free from the French Defender way too easily just before setting up Hugo Ekitike to make it 2-1 for the home team.

Bayern’s struggles to break down teams that play in a low block are well documented. During those struggles, the team has been too vulnerable on the break. At the international level, Upamecano plays in a different system for France compared to the system at Bayern Munich. He is highly rated by his national team coach Didier Deschamps. Bayern plays a system based on a high defensive line and relies on gegenpressing to quickly win back possession. On the other hand, Deschamps prefers quick counter-attacks with fleet-footed forwards whilst relying less on pressing tactics.

Bayern’s already potent attack can get even better as the season progresses and with that being the case the team will dominate most opponents and win a lot of games. However, so far, neither Kim Min-jae nor Upamecano has been able to distinguish themselves as the necessary leader at the back. It’s time for Kompany to call more upon his attributes as a former world-class defender and implement a more flexible defensive strategy when needed.
