Bayern Munich ended their search for new coach by agreeing a deal with Burnley last week for Vincent Kompany. The Bavarian club held a press conference on Thursday to unveil Kompany as the new coach. Max Eberl was present at the press conference held by Bayern.
Die Roten agreed on a three-year contract with Kompany. They reportedly paid a fee just over €10 million for the Belgian coach. He became the top target for Bayern once Thomas Tuchel couldn’t reach an agreement with the club to stay for one more season.
Kompany was not at the top of Bayern’s shortlist when they started the search for a new coach in April. Eberl and Christoph Freund tried to sign Xabi Alonso from Bayer Leverkusen. However, the Spanish coach decided to stay at Bayer Leverkusen. Die Roten faced rejects from Julian Nagelsmann and Ralf Rangnick, while Crystal Palace didn’t entertain their offer for Oliver Glasner.
After failing to get their top four options, Bayern tried to convince Tuchel to stay for one more season. When it became clear that Tuchel would not remain in Munich, Bayern accelerated talks for Kompany. While talking to the media on Thursday (via iMiaSanMia), Kompany revealed the style of play he wants to implement at Bayern.
"I grew up on the streets of Brussels, in the Anderlecht academy. You have to be a team, I want my players to have courage, to be aggressive. I want us to play like that, that's also what defines my character. We want to maintain that throughout the entire game."Vincent Kompany
Eberl echoed Kompany’s vision while stressing Bayern’s need to play dominant football next season. He also insisted that Bayern always wanted a long-term solution for the head coach role instead of looking for a stopgap solution.
Kompany implemented an expansive style of football at Burnley. The English club excelled in the Championship during the 2022/23 campaign, accumulating 101 points to win the league. They dominated teams by keeping the ball and consistently creating chances in the final third. Kompany’s team also excelled while playing out from the back.
The Belgian coach didn't compromise his principles when Burnley got promoted to the Premier League. Burnley played a similar style of football, but they failed to get the necessary results to survive in the Premier League. They were relegated from the Premier League after finishing 19th in the points table.
Kompany will get better results at Bayern since he will have better players at his disposal. The Belgian coach will have to handle a dressing room full of stars. It is not going to be a straightforward ride for Kompany at Bayern. The Bavarian club has to back him wholeheartedly to make this project work.
