Serge Gnabry going to play crucial role for Bayern under Vincent Kompany

At the start of the summer, Serge Gnabry looked like a player who could end up leaving Bayern Munich after a miserable last season. The Bavarian club was reportedly keen on listening to offers for the German winger.

However, Gnabry had different plans. The German international worked hard on his fitness during the summer after recovering from the hamstring injury that ended his campaign prematurely in May. Gnabry was not actively looking for a new club despite interest from Newcastle United. He was determined to get back to his best in Munich under Kompany.

Gnabry had a decent pre-season, which earned him a place in the starting XI against Wolfsburg. The German international repaid the faith shown in him by Kompany with a quality performance in the final third. Gnabry had five shots in the game (with four on target) and accumulated an xG of 0.82. He consistently caused problems for Wolfsburg and eventually got the reward late in the game.

The 29-year-old’s goal in the opening league game will further boost his confidence. A fit and confident Gnabry has a big role to play for Bayern this season despite the club’s desire to sell him in the summer. (Stats courtesy: FotMob)
