Kompany justified to stick with Joshua Kimmich in midfield

After the injury to Sacha Boey last weekend, the straightforward approach for Kompany would have been deploying Joshua Kimmich in the right-back position. However, the Belgian coach probably believed Kimmich’s contributions in the midfield were too good to ignore this season.

Kimmich continued to justify Kompany’s decision to keep him in the midfield. The German midfielder was flawless against Werder Bremen. He has got back to his best after a difficult last season. The 29-year-old helped Bayern dominate the midfield by playing a whopping 131 accurate passes in the game (A record in the Bundesliga this season).

Apart from keeping things tidy in the midfield, Kimmich was not shying away from playing the risky passes in the final third to create chances. The German international is in good space right now, playing his best football in the last 12 months. It was a sensible decision from Kompany to avoid tinkering with his position.

Moreover, the Belgian coach has found good solutions in the right-back position. Raphael Guerreiro played this role to a good effect against Dinamo Zagreb, while Konrad Laimer filled in this position on Saturday. It will be a toss-up between them for the right-back spot in next weekend’s game against Bayer Leverkusen. Kompany is likely to stick with Kimmich in the midfield against the defending Bundesliga champions.
