Leroy Sane shines despite a mixed evening

It was a mixed evening for Leroy Sane at the Allianz Arena. The German forward missed a glorious chance to open the scoring in the second minute of the game. Harry Kane delightfully played Sane through with just the keeper to beat but the German attacker, from just meters out, picked out the keeper’s left foot instead of the back of the net. A few minutes later, this time from further out, Sane skied his effort.

In fairness to Sane, he has been bothered by a lingering groin injury which has hampered him from regaining the sort of form that he displayed during the first half of the season. Despite Sane’s first-half struggles, Thomas Tuchel continued to show faith in him for the second half by switching him over to the right flank. The tactical change made all the difference for Die Roten. Sane broke his six-month scoring drought with a spectacular strike early in the second half to draw Bayern level.

The German international was substituted later in the game. The Bavarian faithful will hope to see Sane closer to full fitness level in the second leg. Kane, Musiala, and Sane caused problems for Real Madrid throughout the match and they will need to do so again in the second leg.
