Michael Olise, Harry Kane on target as Bayern claim routine win in final summer friendly
By Tom Vinall
On Tuesday lunchtime, Bayern Munich played Grasshopper Club Zurich in a behind closed doors friendly and cruised to a 4-0 win thanks to goals from Michael Olise, Harry Kane, Mathys Tel, and Thomas Müller.
The game was seen as a good opportunity to get minutes into the legs of the players that needed it, particularly those that had been away at international tournaments over the summer.
Vincent Kompany went with a starting XI featuring; Ulreich; Aznou. Dier, Goretzka, Davies; Laimer, Palhinha; Olise, Vidovic, Coman; Kane
Michael Olise opened the scoring after 12 minutes, a lose ball fell to the Frenchman just inside the box and he arrowed a first time shot into the top corner.
That was the only goal of the first-half, but just two minutes into the second half, Harry Kane scored from close range after being superbly picked out by Adam Aznou.
With the injury picked up by Josip Stanišić in training, Aznou could find himself playing some significant minutes at right-back in the coming games.
After 62 minutes, Kompany replaced all his outfield players. On came Thomas Müller, Sacha Boey, Dayot Upamecano, Kim Min-Jae, Serge Gnabry, Mathys Tel, Raphaël Guerreiro, Joshua Kimmich, Aleksandar Pavlović and Nestory Irankunda.
Just six minutes later, Kimmich found Tel to make it 3-0, putting the game out of Grasshoppers' reach. In stoppage time, Müller picked up where he had left off in the DFB-Pokal first round, making it 4-0 after being found by Guerreiro.
It was interesting to see Goretzka start, considering, from the outside at least, that Bayern are trying to push the 29-year old out of the club. The former Schalke man was deployed at centre-back, and partnered Eric Dier.
Friendly or not, goals from Olise and Kane will have fans excited and in hope that there will be more of that to come across the 24/25 season.
The friendly also featured another impressive cameo from Tel off the left, where he grabbed a goal, completed 2/2 dribbles and created a big chance. He may have secured his starting spot for Bayern's trip to VFL Wolfsburg this weekend, their opening Bundesliga game.
