Julian Nagelsmann has decided against returning to Bayern Munich, and has instead extended his contract as head coach of the Germany national team.

Bayern Munich have suffered another big blow in their hopes of appointing a new head coach this month, with Julian Nagelsmann extending his contract with the Germany national team. The 36 year old will stay on as Germany head coach until the conclusion of the next FIFA World Cup, that will take place in the United States, Mexico, and Canada in 2026.

Nagelsmann was thought to be Bayern Munich's top target following Xabi Alonso's decision to stay at Bayer Leverkusen. Following his decision to stay on as Germany head coach, it remains to be seen who the new frontrunner will be to replace Thomas Tuchel, who is set to depart at the end of the season.

Aston Villa manager Unai Emery and Austria head coach Ralf Rangnick have also been linked with the Bayern Munich job in recent weeks, while Roberto De Zerbi is another coach the Bayern bosses admire.

Julian Nagelsmann, who became Bayern Munich head coach in 2021 before being sacked two years later, said that the decision to stay on with the Germany national team was one he made from the heart. "This is a decision of the heart. It is a great honor to be able to coach the national team and work with the best players in the country. With successful, passionate performances, we have the chance to inspire an entire country."

Nagelsmann was appointed Germany head coach in September 2023, and will lead the national team at the European Championship on home soil this summer.
