The Euros came to a painful end for Bayern Munich skipper Manuel Neuer and Germany. Spain scored late in the extra time to seal a 2-1 win against Germany in the quarterfinals on Friday. It was a painful defeat since Germany had dominated significant chunks of the game and created big chances to put Spain under pressure.

With the defeat against Spain, Neuer’s dream of winning the Euros with Germany also ended. The 38-year-old goalkeeper has not announced retirement from international football, but he will certainly not be playing top-level football until Euros 2028.

It remains to be seen if Neuer will continue playing until World Cup 2026. In terms of club football, Neuer’s long-term future at Bayern is far from certain. He signed a one-year deal in December, which keeps him in Munich until the end of the 2024/25 campaign.

Bayern are already planning for life after Neuer as they secured the long-term future of Alexander Nubel and signed Daniel Peretz last time. Neuer has always hinted that he would retire at Bayern. While talking to Sky Sports this week, the German goalkeeper opened the door to playing in the MLS once his contract at Bayern ends.

"If anything, the MLS would be an option. I spoke to Bastian Schweinsteiger, who played there, about it. But you have to think it through carefully. Also, because they play a lot on artificial turf there, which is not ideal for a goalkeeper."

Neuer also ruled out moving to Qatar and Saudi Arabia. The German international remains focused on winning titles with Bayern next season. His future will be a topic of discussion for Die Roten during the second half of the season.

The 38-year-old goalkeeper will go on vacation for a few days before reporting for pre-season at Bayern. Neuer will likely be part of the squad that will fly to Asia for the pre-season tour. The German goalkeeper is eager to regain the Bundesliga title after losing it to Bayer Leverkusen next season. With a significant possibility of next season being Neuer’s last in Munich, he will hope to win all possible trophies next season.

Bayern need to see the bigger picture and part ways with Neuer next summer. He is still a fine goalkeeper, but Die Roten needs to find his long-term successor. Considering Nubel’s performances with VfB Stuttgart last season, he deserves to get an extended run in the starting XI from the 2025/26 campaign.

Along with Neuer, Sven Ulreich is also expected to bring the curtains down on his Bayern career at the end of next season. The German goalkeeper also signed a one-year extension in December. Ulreich could retire from football and stay at Bayern in a different capacity.
