Bayern Munich's top performers from 1-1 draw with Bayer Leverkusen
Alphonso Davies
There may be a cloud of uncertainty hanging over the future of Alphonso Davies at the club, but it wasn’t evident on Saturday. Against Leverkusen, the ‘Roadrunner’ looked close to being back to his best.
Apart from Robert Andrich’s first-half strike, the visitors rarely threatened Manuel Neuer in goal. A big part of that was due to the play of the 23-year-old Canadian international. On the left-hand side of the defense, Davies used his pace to cover well and sniff out any potential threats.
Davies won six of his seven ground duels and provided a reliable outlet to advance the ball when the opposition tried to press.
With Raphael Guerreiro deployed as an inverted wing-back on the right-hand side of the defense, Bayern sacrificed overlapping width in attack on that side of the park, but benefitted from having an extra body in midfield.
However, on the left flank, in addition to defending well, Davies also linked up well with Serge Gnabry and Kingsley Coman in attack to stretch the Leverkusen defense. If Davies can string together more performances like this then his likely departure at the end of the season would be an even more bitter pill to swallow.
