Bayern Munich reignite interest in exciting Bundesliga wing-back

Bayern Munich have reportedly reignited their interest in one of the best wing-backs in the Bundesliga this season.

The summer transfer window is set to be busy for Bayern Munich. The club chiefs are planning for an upheaval after a disappointing campaign in the Bundesliga. Max Eberl and Christoph Freund are set to be in charge of completing transfer deals during the summer. Both will work in tandem to strengthen the squad.

The Bavarian club strengthened the right-back position in January by signing Sacha Boey from Galatasaray. The French full-back became Die Roten’s most expensive buy in the winter transfer window. Despite signing Boey in January, Bayern remains keen on one of the best right wing-backs in the Bundesliga.

According to Sky Sports in Germany, Bayer Leverkusen’s Jeremie Frimpong is on Bayern’s transfer list for the summer. Frimpong may become a concrete target for the Bavarian club if they end up appointing a coach who plays three at the back.

The Dutch full-back is expected to leave Bayer Leverkusen in the summer. He currently has a release clause between €40-45 million in his contract. Bayern will face significant competition for Frimpong since several big clubs are following his situation at Leverkusen.

Frimpong has been in sensational form for Bayer Leverkusen this season under Xabi Alonso. He has been largely used in a wing-back position on the right flank. The Dutch full-back has chipped in with ten goals and six assists for Leverkusen this season across all competitions. He was also on the scoresheet against Bayern a few weeks ago.

The 23-year-old is exceptional going forward, but it remains to be seen how he will fare if consistently deployed in the right-back position. Bayern keep an eye on several quality players in the Bundesliga, but I would be really surprised if the interest in Frimpong converts into a transfer. Die Roten have several areas to address in the summer. They cannot afford to spend a big fee in an area where they already have good options in the squad.

Bayern are currently targeting Leverkusen’s Xabi Alonso to replace Thomas Tuchel in the summer. The only way a move for Frimpong will materialize is if Alonso is keen on bringing the wing-back to Bavaria.

Noussair Mazraoui’s future will be in the spotlight if Bayern goes ahead with the transfer of Frimpong. The Moroccan defender is yet to firmly cement his place in the starting XI at Bayern. He shared the right-back responsibilities with Konrad Laimer in Hinrunde. Boey is expected to compete with him for a place in the starting XI until the end of the season. Frimpong’s arrival will significantly dent Mazraoui’s chances of getting a reasonable amount of game time.
