Bayern Munich: Lessons learned from 1-0 loss against Aston Villa
Still no clear leader in the heart of defense
Kim Min-jae and Dayot Upamecano didn’t play badly against Villa, per se, but the French defender didn’t look all that comfortable against either Ollie Watkins or the goalscorer - Jhon Duran. Upamecano’s first-half yellow card was something Bayern could have done without. Meanwhile, Kim Min-jae has been the more solid of the two so far this season, but he still isn’t back to his best.
Although Manuel Neuer’s positioning was at fault for the goal, the defensive duo needs to take it up a notch. With key defenders missing due to injury Kompany has no real alternatives to Kim and Upamecano in central defense. Eric Dier just doesn’t have the pace to be relied upon to play a high line.
Bayern will return to domestic action on Sunday when they travel to the western part of Germany to take on second-placed Eintracht Frankfurt at Deutsche Bank Park in what promises to be a mouth-watering top-of-the-table clash. Frankfurt have been playing an entertaining and exciting brand of football this season with Egyptian forward Omar Marmoush leading the charge. Marmoush is currently the league’s top goalscorer with six, one more than Harry Kane. It's left to be seen whether or not Frankfurt would become the third successive team to set up in a low block against Bayern.
