Defense once again looked uncertain

Bayern Munich managed to keep a clean sheet against FC Koln, but that was more down to the heroics of deputy goalkeeper Sven Ulreich than it was to any of the back four.

Noussair Mazraoui looked out of sorts as the left-back. The rustiness shown by the Moroccan full-back is understandable since he recently recovered from an injury. Although a right-back by trade, Mazraoui is quicker than the naturally left-footed Raphael Guerreiro and has performed well for his country whenever he was asked to play in the left-back position. Tuchel is likely counting on Mazraoui to match the pace of Bukayo Saka on Wednesday. On the opposite flank, Joshua Kimmich was Bayern’s best defender as he contributed well at both ends of the pitch.

As for the centre-backs, neither of the three that played against Koln deserve much praise. De ligt and Dier will need to up their game when Arsenal come to town. Upamecano didn’t do anything to warrant being included in the starting Xl on Wednesday against Arsenal.
