England and the Netherlands secured their spots in the Euro 2024 semifinals on Saturday, setting up a mouthwatering contest that will pit Bayern Munich stars Harry Kane and Matthijs de Ligt against each other.
Harry Kane played from the start for England in their Euro 2024 quarterfinal against Switzerland. While the England captain failed to add to his two goals at the tournament, the Three Lions managed to get the job done after a tense penalty shootout.
Trent Alexander-Arnold of Liverpool scored the winning spot-kick, helping England win 5-3 on penalties. Switzerland came ever so close to pulling off an upset, and took the lead in the 75th minute through Breel Embolo. But Bukayo Saka responded five minutes later to take the game to extra time, before England got the job done on penalties.
Kane was forced to come off with an injury during extra time, but revealed after the game that he was suffering from cramps. He should be able to play from the start in England’s semifinal on July 10.
Taking on England in the semifinals will be the Netherlands, after they came from behind and got the better of Turkiye on Saturday evening. Samet Akaydin’s opening goal was canceled out by Stefan de Vrij, before an own goal from Mert Müldür helped Ronald Koeman’s side secure their progress to the semifinals.
Matthijs de Ligt was once again an unused substitute for the Netherlands. The Bayern Munich center-back has yet to feature at Euro 2024.
The Allianz Arena in Munich will host the first semifinal of Euro 2024 on Tuesday, with Kylian Mbappe and France taking on Spain. England and the Netherlands will then square off at the Westfalenstadion in Dortmund on Wednesday.
