The last couple of games have not gone as planned for Bayern Munich. Despite playing well at Allianz Arena against Bayer Leverkusen last Saturday, they only managed to get a point. Bayern hoped to bounce back from disappointment against Leverkusen with a win against Aston Villa in the Champions League, but the Premier League side scored late to clinch a 1-0 win on Wednesday.
Despite two consecutive poor results, Bayern played well in both games. They dominated possession and created several chances. The lack of efficiency in front of the goal cost them wins in these games.
Vincent Kompany was not critical of the team’s performance against Aston Villa. The Belgian coach was content with the way his players performed but called for more ruthlessness in front of the goal. On another day, Bayern would have cruised to a comfortable win at Villa Park.
Kompany’s thoughts on the team’s performances were also echoed by the club chiefs. While talking at the team dinner in England after the defeat against Aston Villa, Bayern CEO Jan-Christian Dreesen praised Kompany (via Bild) for the way the team has been playing under him over the last two months.
"Vincent, we are certain that with your style of play, your speeches, your communication with the players, you've given us a lot of joy in the past few games. You will bring us joy again. We are happy that you are with us. The way we are playing football again makes us very happy. We can feel that the team is having fun."Jan-Christian Dreesen, Bayern Munich CEO
The appointment of Kompany as new Bayern head coach certainly raised eyebrows across Europe. The Belgian has limited level of experience in coaching, but his spells at Anderlecht and Burnley were impressive. The good start to the season for Die Roten has certainly shown that Kompany can bring silverware to Allianz Arena this season.
Bayern look to go into international break on a positive note
After a challenging couple of games, Bayern face another stern test in the Bundesliga on Sunday. The Bavarian club will travel away to face Eintracht Frankfurt on matchday six of the Bundesliga. Frankfurt have been in fine form this season, sitting one point behind Bayern in the points table.
Bayern need to win on Sunday to remain league leaders going into the international break. Considering the last two poor results, Kompany needs victory on Sunday to get the team back on track before the two-week break.
Die Roten can certainly come away with three points if they continue to perform the way they did against Bayer Leverkusen and Aston Villa. The record Bundesliga champions just need to avoid being wasteful in front of the goal. A win on Sunday will extend Bayern’s unbeaten start to the Bundesliga campaign.
