The Weaknesses
One of the biggest concerns with Luis Diaz is his lack of defensive contribution. He is among the worst-ranked wingers in terms of interceptions and clearances. Diaz was also not too aggressive when challenging the opponents. As a result, he barely makes any impact in the defensive third. However, the numbers may not tell the whole story. Diaz often plays on the left wing at Liverpool, where a very defensive and high-motor Andrew Robertson carries most of the defending duties. Diaz is also a fast-break threat, which leads him to preserve his energy and position himself higher up the pitch in the defensive phase.
Luis Diaz led Liverpool in distance covered two seasons ago, but Arne Slot's system allows him to run less in defense. However, Vincent Kompany's intense pressing system in the attacking third can help unlock his defensive potential. His resilience and stamina can make him a constant pest for opponents' defenders in the build-up phase.
Adaptability is also an important criterion, making or breaking a player. Transitioning from a left-wing role in a 4-3-3 at Liverpool to that in a 4-2-3-1 at Bayern can require a little twist. Moreover, although this is not directly football-related, Luis Diaz is only capable of speaking Portuguese, Spanish, and very little English. In the current roster, only João Palhinha and Raphael Guerreiro are Portuguese. With the imminent departures of Bryan Zaragoza and Adam Aznou, there will be very few companions for the new signing. Luis Diaz will need to adapt quickly to a new culture with very little acquaintance with the language and the culture.
