Bayern Munich completed the domestic double for the first time in six years after clinching a 3-0 win against VfB Stuttgart on Saturday. The Bavarian club lifted the Bundesliga title last weekend, finishing 16 points clear at the top.
Die Roten had an eye on another treble, but Paris Saint-Germain narrowly edged them in the Champions League semi-final. The defending European champions won 6-5 on aggregate against Bayern.
Nevertheless, it has been a successful season for Vincent Kompany and Bayern. They asserted their domination in Germany by playing an attractive style of football. Die Roten scored a staggering 122 goals in the Bundesliga, falling short of the all-time record of most goals in a season across Europe’s top five leagues by three goals.
Bayern finished second in the group stages of the Champions League. They delivered impressive performances against Real Madrid and Atalanta in the knock-out stages before succumbing to a narrow defeat against PSG.
Leon Goretzka has enjoyed success with Kompany over the last two seasons despite seeing his game time reduce due to the emergence of Aleksandar Pavlovic. However, the German midfielder is confident that Bayern will achieve European success under Kompany. While talking to the media on Saturday (via iMiaSanMia), Goretzka has backed this squad to win the Champions League.
"If the majority of the team and especially the coach stay together, then I have no doubt that sooner or later they can win the Champions League. I wish them all the best."Leon Goretzka
Goretzka brought down the curtains on his glorious eight-year stay at Bayern on Saturday. The German midfielder came on late in the game for his final appearance for Die Roten. He is leaving Die Roten on a free transfer in the summer.
AC Milan leading the race to sign Goretzka
The former Schalke midfielder was in demand during the winter transfer window. Arsenal and Atletico Madrid showed concrete interest in signing him in January. However, he decided to stay in Munich and help the club in their bid to win a treble.
Goretzka will have plenty of suitors in the summer. He still has several years at the top level. Atletico Madrid may come back for him, but currently, AC Milan are reportedly leading the race to sign him. The German midfielder has held productive talks with the Italian club.
The 31-year-old will turn his attention to the World Cup. He is expected to play a key role for Germany in the summer. There will be further interest from other big European clubs if Goretzka excels in the USA during the World Cup. The German midfielder will most likely make a decision on his future after the tournament.
