Viking's U18 team set a good example earlier today, winning 2-0 in a UEFA Youth League match against Bayern; a little football fairytale was already written in Norway, and in the other game a few hours later, a big football fairytale nearly came true with Viking bringing home a 3-3 draw, historic from their perspective, disastrous from Bayern's perspective.

Against a changed Bayern, with Jonas Urbig in goal, Viking burst out of the starting blocks. Again, the opponent managed to score in the opening minutes of the match, with Bayern failing to learn from their early blunder against Augsburg at the weekend.

From kick-off, the home team pressed high, leading to an early corner that became a goal within 70 seconds. Gianni Stensness beat Urbig with a clever header. As in Augsburg last Saturday, Bayern almost scored an equalizer immediately but failed to find the back of the net. Laimer’s good shot after a perfect Olise pass was deflected, just missing goalkeeper Arild Ostbo. Several minutes later, Olise himself almost scored from a free kick, which was again deflected.

2-0 for Viking via a very well-executed counterattack

As Viking had to walk back and forth more on their own during the second half, the fairy tale’s second goal occurred. A well-worked counterattack, culminating in a very fine through ball by Erik Botheim, reached Peter Christiansen. He had plenty of space toward Jonas Urbig’s goal, and his finish was never in doubt putting Viking up 2-0 just before half-time.

Of course, Kompany made some significant substitutions at halftime. He brought on Ismael Saibari, Dayot Upamecano, and Alphonso Davies, all of whom made a visible difference in the second half. The Moroccan played as well as in his Augsburg appearance, and it awakened the flame in Bayern. Konrad Laimer's clever play in the box led to a penalty, a light at the end of the tunnel for Bayern. It was easily converted by Harry Kane in the 54th minute to bring Bayern back within touching distance.

Again, Kane came to the rescue just six minutes later. A badly taken corner from the Bayern side was kept alive, and Kimmich delivered a perfect cross to the former Spurs striker, who found the back of the net again to make it 2-2, and is now closing in on Cristiano Ronaldo’s record of scoring in 11 games in a row.

Red card for Olise changes the game for the umpteenth time

Viking somewhat came off the rails at 2-2, and just one minute later it seemed Luis Díaz would give Bayern the lead; however, just as in Augsburg, the Colombian was just offside. But ten minutes later, Diaz finally found the back of the net, making it 3-2 after all. Of course, Harry Kane was the architect, delivering a brilliant pass to Kimmich on the right. He then found the cleverly running Díaz, who had an empty goal to score into.

It seemed that the ‘Viking fairytale’ had died out. But another plot twist came when Michael Olise received his second yellow card, resulting in his first career red card. He threw the ball at Zlatko Tripić’s face, just pure silliness from the Frenchman.

Bayern seemed to survive in Stavanger, but in the final minute of regular time, Herman Johan Haugen scored a historic goal in Viking’s European club history, bringing home a 3-3 draw at the full-time whistle.
