Bayern Munich have got the better of Borussia Dortmund on the pitch over the last decade. The Bavarian club also currently has a lead of nine points over Dortmund in this season’s title race. Unless there is a massive drop off in form, Bayern are expected to beat their arch-rivals for the Bundesliga title.

Even though the two clubs are rivals on the pitch, transfers take place between them. If not a direct transfer, there has been a scenario where a former Bayern player has joined Dortmund later in his career, or vice versa. Former Bayern winger Mathys Tel has no plans to be part of the group of players who have played for the Bavarian club and Borussia Dortmund.

Tel has struggled to make a significant impact at Tottenham Hotspur since joining the club on a permanent transfer from Bayern last summer. With Spurs facing a relegation threat, Tel’s future has been subject to speculation ahead of the summer transfer window.

The French forward has been linked with a return to the Bundesliga, but for a move to Borussia Dortmund. While talking to TZ, Tel’s agent revealed that the French forward has no plans to play for any other club in Germany due to his affection for Bayern.

"I don’t know if Dortmund really want Mathys, but honestly, a return to Bayern is the only way Mathys would go back to Germany. He can’t play for any other club in the Bundesliga. He loves FC Bayern."

Tel should have been part of Bayern’s long-term plans

Tel joined Bayern from Rennes in 2023 for a fee in excess of €30 million. The young French forward delivered impressive performances during his first two seasons at the club when he was largely used from the bench.

Considering his immediate impact at Bayern, the club chiefs extended his contract. The French forward was expected to be part of Die Roten’s long-term plans. However, things changed quickly last season.

After getting inadequate game time under Vincent Kompany, Tel pushed for a loan move in the winter transfer window. Amidst interest from Manchester United and Tottenham Hotspur, Tel ended up signing a loan with an option to buy deal with the North London side. Tel helped Spurs to win the Europa League and eventually sealed a permanent deal move to the London-based club.

However, Tel has not managed to make a significant impact this season. It is a shame that a player of his talent has not had consistent game time to develop and show his talent. Considering the quality and pace he had in his armoury, it is a shame that Tel is no longer playing at Bayern.
