Bayern Munich looked all over the place defensively against Freiburg in the first 20 minutes. They conceded two goals from set-pieces but eventually recovered and contained Freiburg for the rest of the game. Bayern went on to win the game 6-2 to remain unbeaten in the Bundesliga this season.

Dayot Upamecano had a slow start to the game against Freiburg, but like the team, he recovered and delivered a solid performance over the next 70 minutes. The French defender also contributed at the other end of the pitch by scoring his team’s third goal early in the second half, which eventually gave Bayern the lead in the game.

Once Bayern went up a gear in the final third and secured a healthy lead, Vincent Kompany substituted Upamecano in the 77th minute to give him some rest before Wednesday’s big Champions League game against Arsenal.

Upamecano has been the standout center-back for Bayern. His form has ensured that several big clubs are showing interest in signing him on a free transfer at the end of the season. Die Roten remain in talks with him regarding a contract extension.

While talking to Ransport on Saturday after the win against Freiburg (via iMiaSanMia), Upamecano insisted that he is happy at Bayern and the talks are continuing with the club. Since several reports have suggested that financial details of the new deal are a stumbling block, Upamecano insisted that money is not dictating the contract talks with the Bavarian club.

"It has nothing to do with money. I talk a lot with Max Eberl and Christoph Freund. I'm happy here, I'm having a good season, I'm doing my job, and I'm giving everything for this club. Let's see what happens."

Paris Saint-Germain and Real Madrid are showing concrete interest in Upamecano. The two European giants have reportedly held talks with Upamecano’s representatives. Bayern chiefs are optimistic about reaching an agreement with the French star for a new deal.

Upamecano eyeing more improvement in his performances

The 27-year-old defender has achieved consistency in his performances under Vincent Kompany over the last 18 months. He went from being an error-prone defender to one of the most consistent defenders in the Bundesliga.

Despite excelling for large parts of the last 18 months, Upamecano told Sky Sports this weekend that he still has a lot more to give on the pitch. The Bavarian faithful will hope that Upamecano’s peak will be in Munich, and he continues to marshal Bayern’s defense for the next few years.

Upamecano was excellent for Bayern against Paris Saint-Germain before the international break. He defended resolutely to ensure Die Roten came back home with three points despite playing with ten men for the entire second half. Kompany will need need similar level of performance from the Frenchman on Wednesday against Arsenal to get a positive result at the Emirates Stadium.
