“Catastrophe” -Uli Hoeness on Thomas Tuchel’s time at Bayern Munich
Bayern Munich will no longer have to pay wages to Thomas Tuchel. The German coach left Bayern at the end of last season, but he had one year left on his contract. Tuchel has landed a new job this week, allowing Bayern to save close to €5 million on his wages.
The former Bayern head coach was unveiled as the new head coach of the men’s English national team on Wednesday. Tuchel will start in this new role from January 1, 2025, after penning down an 18-month contract. Bayern striker Harry Kane is looking forward to working with Tuchel once again. However, there is no love lost with Tuchel and Bayern's honorary president Uli Hoeness.
According to Bild, Bayern’s honorary president, Uli Hoeness, was very critical about Thomas Tuchel’s time at the club during a leadership meeting at Allianz Arena this week. The Bayern legend insisted that Tuchel was a catastrophe for the club.
Apart from reaching the semi-final of the Champions League, Thomas Tuchel struggled during his only full season at Bayern. The Bavarian club finished third in the Bundesliga and got knocked out by Saarbrucken in DFB Pokal. Die Roten suffered several heavy defeats, which effectively ended Tuchel’s reign.
Hoeness impressed by Vincent Kompany at Bayern
Bayern ended up appointing Vincent Kompany as the successor of Tuchel. The Belgian coach was not the prime candidate for this role, but Bayern eventually decided to hire him after missing out on other targets. Kompany has repaid the club’s faith by making a good start to the season.
Uli Hoeness is also impressed by the style of football Bayern are playing under Kompany. While talking to Kicker, Hoeness heaped praise on the Belgian coach. The Bayern legend is particularly impressed with the way Kompany has quickly implemented an entertaining style of football. Hoeness is once again enjoying watching Bayern play at the Allianz Arena.
Kompany has helped Bayern to four wins and two draws in the six games in the Bundesliga across two months. Die Roten were unfortunate to drop points against Bayer Leverkusen and Eintracht Frankfurt since the quality of performance warranted wins. Bigger tests await Kompany, but early signs do suggest that he will be successful at Bayern.
Bayern will be back in action on Saturday after two weeks of international football. They will host VfB Stuttgart on matchday seven of the Bundesliga. Kompany and his team had a rough patch before the break as they had two draws in the Bundesliga and suffered their first defeat of the season away at Villa Park in the Champions League. The Belgian coach will hope to see his team deliver an emphatic performance on Saturday and collect all three points.
