It was one of the rare occasions on Tuesday when Bayern Munich had the entire group of outfield players available for selection in a big Champions League quarter-final game. Vincent Kompany was spoilt for options during the 2-1 win against Real Madrid.
Joshua Kimmich highlighted the importance of having the entire squad available for selection before the game against Real Madrid. It does look like Bayern’s luck with injury may have run out quickly, as they announced an injury blow on Friday.
Lennart Karl is set to be out for three weeks due to a hamstring strain. The young forward didn’t come on against Real Madrid on Tuesday. As things stand, Karl will certainly miss the second leg of the Champions League quarter-final. He is also expected to sit out of the DFB Pokal semi-final against Bayer Leverkusen on April 23.
It is a shame for Karl not to be fit to play against Real Madrid. The youngster was excited to play against the Spanish giants. Earlier this season, he had insisted that Real Madrid is a dream club for him, but the youngster is happy in Munich.
The injury comes at the worst possible time for Karl. After a slow start to 2026, Karl had picked up form over the last few weeks. He delivered a great performance against Atalanta in the second leg of the Champions League round of 16. The youngster also shone for Germany during the international. This injury just halts the momentum he had built over the last few weeks.
Nevertheless, the youngster has shown the mentality to come back strongly. Karl will hope Bayern progress in the Champions League and DFB Pokal so that he can get the opportunity to play a role in their quest to win multiple trophies this season when he returns from injury.
Sven Ulreich starts training on the pitch at Sabner Strasse
The only other injured player in the squad returned to training on the pitch at Sabner Strasse this week. Sven Ulreich resumed training on the grass this week. The German goalkeeper had suffered an injury while playing against Bayer Leverkusen in March. It was Ulreich’s first appearance of this season.

It remains to be seen when Ulreich will return to the matchday squad. The current injury looks like a one-off for Ulreich. He remains keen on playing at the top level for Bayern for one more season. It remains to be seen if Bayern will offer another year of contract extension to their number three in the goalkeeping department.
