Joshua Kimmich

When the Bayern attack wasn’t overwhelming the hosts, Joshua Kimmich made sure Bayern remained in charge of proceedings. The German captain had an unbelievable 171 touches in the game, and he kept things ticking over in midfield by completing 95% of his passes (154/162). Thanks in no small part to Kimmich, Die Roten’s ball possession was an eye-popping 80%. The 29-year-old midfielder won all of his ground duels and created one big chance.

It was a masterful display from Kimmich as he was ever-present either supporting the attack or helping out with defensive duties. In the second half, Bayern took their foot off the gas a bit, but Kimmich’s consistent play ensured that there were no consequences for doing so.

João Palhinha

João Palhinha arguably delivered his best performance in a Bayern shirt to date against Mainz. The 29-year-old defensive midfielder understandably didn’t see as much of the ball as Kimmich, but he was a near-perfect foil to him on the evening.

Palhinha made his presence felt with 111 touches whilst winning six of ten ground duels and both of his aerial duels. In addition to being solid defensively, he completed 90% of his passes (90/100) including seven of eight long balls. Palhinha is steadily finding his footing in Die Roten’s starting XI. If he can build on his performance against Mainz then Vincent Kompany will have a selection headache for the number six position when Alexandar Pavlović makes his return from injury.
