Strengthening the attack is the top priority for Bayern Munich in the summer as they will be without Thomas Muller and Leroy Sane next season.
Alongside the attempts to bring in a starting-caliber winger, Bayern Munich also needs to reinforce the squad depth on the flanks. According to BILD (via iMiaSanMia), the name of Freiburg's Ritsu Doan has been discussed within the board as a potential backup option.
Ritsu Doan had an impressive campaign in the 2024/25 season. The 26-year-old scored 10 goals and dished out 7 assists for Freiburg en route to a shocking top-five finish. For comparison, he had a better goal and assist tally in the league than Nico Williams and Rafael Leao, two candidates for a big-money move to the Allianz Arena. Doan also featured in all 34 games of the Bundesliga season, starting all but one game.
The Japanese player is a left-footed player who plays primarily on the right but can also play as a central attacking midfielder. Standing at only 5 feet 7, Doan compensates for his lack of physique with great balance, dribbling skills, and clinical finishing. His best attribute is his defensive workrate and stamina, which allows him the frequently track back to aid his teammates. Ritsu Doan is one of the best wingers in the top five league in tackles made, shots blocked, and clearances.
Ritsu Doan's ample Bundesliga experience with Freiburg and Arminia Bielefeld means he wouldn't need much time to get used to the weather and culture. Doan can slot right in and be a valuable option in less important domestic league matches for Vincent Kompany. Furthermore, Doan's teammate in the national setting Hiroki Ito can help him feel acquainted with the new club.
Bayern Munich would have to compete with Eintracht Frankfurt and Borussia Dortmund for the signature of Ritsu Doan. Frankfurt has made Doan their top transfer target. Freiburg's boss Jochen Saier is demanding a price tag of at least €20 million for their star winger. Doan's contract with Freiburg runs until 2027.
Christopher Nkunku on Bayern's radar
Bayern is also looking at another former Bundesliga star Christopher Nkunku with news that he may leave Chelsea this summer. The former RB Leipzig player can play well on the wings and as a striker. Plus, Nkunku has had great seasons in the Bundesliga, even winning the top scorer award before moving to England. Despite being relatively injury-riddled, he could still be the perfect squad player in Kompany's system.
Bayern has made concrete moves for Nkunku in the last winter transfer window and may look to revisit this deal. The French forward is expected to cost under €35 million, which is almost half of what Chelsea had demanded in January.
