Strong start and even stronger finish as youngsters shine

Bayern got off to an impressive start against Tottenham. After taking the lead in the 12th minute, Die Roten would have been on course to blow the opposition out of the water in the first half had Harry Kane not skied his spot kick soon after.

In the first half, Bayern converted just one of their fourteen shots. However, in the second half, the accuracy level increased as the Bavarian side converted three of twelve attempts at goal.

After Kingsley Coman made it 2-0, just after the hour mark, with a beautifully curled left-footed shot, Kompany decided to clear the bench for the final 20-odd minutes by making ten substitutions. Apart from the introductions of Kim Min-jae, Sacha Boey, and Raphael Guerreiro, the other seven players introduced to finish the game were from Bayern’s youth brigade, with 20-year-old Tom Bischof being the eldest.

The performances from the youngsters were thoroughly impressive, to say the least. In the 74th minute, 18-year-old defensive midfielder David Santos Daiber showed that he was in tune with Bayern’s pressing game when he displayed composure to set up 17-year-old winger Lennart Karl for the third goal. Karl’s first-time curling shot from just outside the box was absolutely sublime. It was his first goal for the Bayern senior team. So far in pre-season, he looks a capable deputy on the right wing.

With ten minutes left, 16-year-old Wisdom Mike made a run down the left flank, and his subsequent shot led to a scrimmage in the Tottenham box, which ended with 19-year-old Paul Wanner setting up 18-year-old striker Jonah Kusi-Asare for another splendidly curled shot to make it 4-0.

Whilst the attack was bypassing the Tottenham defense, Bischof and Daiber matched the opposing midfield stride for stride. Not to be outdone, 16-year-old center-back Cassiano Kiala played alongside Kim in the heart of the defense, keeping the Tottenham attack at bay.
