Defensive instability
At the risk of sounding like a broken record, the final score and offensive performance on Saturday were not the only things that shared similarities to the 3-2 victory in Wiesbaden. Vincent Kompany’s first-choice back four of Stanisic, Tah, Upamecano, and Laimer clearly underperformed in Augsburg. Overall, Bayern’s defensive performance on Saturday wasn’t much better than it had been three days prior. In Wiesbaden, the home team scored in the second half with their only two shots of the match.
On Saturday, Augsburg converted two of three second half shots. That’s a statistically marginal improvement, but still not good enough after leading 3-0.
Bayern’s inability to kill off a game is disconcerting to say the least. It’s a double whammy when both the offense and the defense contribute to the problem. Against top-tier level opposition this won’t work. Vincent Kompany and his troops have two weeks to improve in both areas.
Depending on who Bayern sign on the deadline day, Kompany has to make sure that his team kills of the game consistently and also has defensive stability to ensure they can compete on all fronts.
