On Friday night, Bayern Munich kicked off the new Bundesliga season with an impressive 6-0 demolition of RB Leipzig in front of an exuberant home crowd at the Allianz Arena.
Bayern started the match brightly and twice came close to scoring before Michael Olise gave his team the lead in the 27th minute. The writing was on the wall five minutes later when Luis Diaz, on his Bundesliga debut, scored with a rocket of a shot from inside the box to make it 2-0. Olise scored again towards the end of the first half to give Die Roten a comfortable 3-0 lead at the interval.
In the second half, Harry Kane put the nail in the coffin for Leipzig with a stunning hat trick in the space of fourteen minutes, commencing in the 64th minute. Let’s take a look at some important takeaways from a perfect Friday evening for Bayern Munich.
Serge Gnabry’s value shouldn’t be underestimated
With Luis Diaz being the only senior addition to the attacking department during the current transfer window, despite the departures of Leroy Sane, Thomas Muller, and Kingsley Coman, Die Roten is clearly lacking offensive depth.
Be that as it may, the performance against Leipzig from Bayern’s attacking quartet of Harry Kane, Serge Gnabry, Michael Olise, and the aforementioned Luis Diaz was truly magnificent.
Whilst Olise, Diaz, and Kane did the scoring with the hat trick from Kane grabbing the headlines, the contributions of Gnabry shouldn’t be overlooked. The 30-year-old veteran looked comfortable and was highly effective in the second striker/number ten role. Gnabry set up Diaz for the second goal with an exquisite flick and also provided the assist to Olise for the third goal. With Jamal Musiala still months away from a return to action, seeing Gnabry in this sort of form was a breath of fresh air. The Bavarian faithful will be hoping that it continues at least until the return of Musiala.
