Bayern Munich regained the German Super Cup on Saturday courtesy of a 2-1 victory over VfB Stuttgart at the MPH Arena.

After having several attempts to sign Nick Woltemade rebuffed by the host team, Bayern made the trip to Stuttgart, missing several key players due to injury. The situation with Woltemade made the matchup between the two teams all the more intriguing.

Bayern had to dig deep to come away with the victory. After falling behind to Harry Kane’s 18th-minute strike, the hosts increased the intensity and came close to an equaliser on two occasions before the half-time interval. Victory wasn’t secured until the 77th minute when newcomer-Luis Diaz headed home Bayern’s second goal. Stuttgart fought until the final whistle and were rewarded with a consolation goal in added time.

In the end, with the recent name change from DFB-Supercup to Franz Beckenbauer Supercup, it was only fitting that the first edition of the renamed trophy returned to Bavaria. Let’s take a look at some interesting takeaways from Die Roten’s hard-fought 2-1 victory.

Luis Diaz scores his first goal for Bayern

It goes without saying that after his high-profile €70 million transfer from Liverpool, a lot is expected of Luis Diaz. Based on his time at Merseyside, he represents a significant upgrade on the left flank for Bayern.

However, based on the fact he failed to find the back of the net in three pre-season games for Bayern, there were concerns that he may have left his shooting boots at Anfield.

With that in mind, it was a huge relief when Lucho headed in Bayern’s second goal. He may not have laced up his shooting boots just yet, but it was a strong show of character from him to step up on the big occasion to score the winner by putting his head to good use. Now that he has gotten that first goal out of the way it would be easier for him to win over his teammates and the Bavarian faithful.
