Bayern Munich: Takeaways from 3-1 win over Slovan Bratislava

A comprehensive 3-1 win at home was not enough for Bayern Munich to avoid a two-legged play-off for entry to the knock-out phase of the newly designed European Champions League.

Kingsley Coman remains the best of Bayern’s veteran wingers

Bayern’s attack looked better in the second half when Kingsley Coman, Jamal Musiala, and Serge Gnabry entered the game just after the hour mark. Musiala and Coman were the most impactful of the Bayern substitutes. Musiala set up Kane, with a cross from the left, to head home Bayern’s second on the night. Coman did one better when he converted a rebound from Gnabry’s parried shot to make it 3-0.

The reality, however, is that neither Coman nor Gnabry proved to be major difference makers in the quest for goals. Meanwhile, Leroy Sané, who was having one of his better games, still managed to miss two gilt-edged scoring opportunities. Considering the fact that Kingsley Coman was the most impactful winger on the night by scoring for the first time in 14 appearances it was just another reminder of a need for an upgrade on the wings.

As things currently stand, injuries remain a concern for Bayern and the upcoming two-legged play-off against either Manchester City or Celtic could very well make or break the season for Bayern.
