Michael Olise forms a menacing combination with the full-backs

Even though the right side of Bayern’s defense was left exposed for Shakhtar's goal, there is no denying the fact that Bayern’s more potent attacks from wide positions came from the right-hand side. In the 11th minute, Konrad Laimer, who started in the right-back position, blasted the equalizer into the roof of the net after being set up in the box with a clever flick from Michael Olise.

With his incredible work rate, Laimer provided necessary support to Olise in both the outside and inside channels up until he was switched over to the left flank when Sacha Boey replaced Raphael Guerreiro midway through the second half.

With Boey being a naturally attacking right back, he was soon in the thick of the action as he was fouled in the box three minutes after coming on in the second half. His compatriot Michael Olise converted the resultant penalty kick to make it 3-1.  Olise’s second goal exemplified the benefits of playing him as an inverted winger supported by an attacking full-back. The manner in which the 23-year-old French attacker drifted inside and cut through the Shakhtar defense with a brilliant solo run before calmly slotting home Bayern’s final item conjured up memories of Arjen Robben.
