Fatigue factor
Against Union Berlin, Bayern looked off the pace for much of the first half and at the start of the second half as well. Defensively, they had difficulty containing Union Berlin. They also struggled to create chances in the final third.
After Tuesday’s taxing 2-1 in Paris over PSG, Bayern’s intensity was understandably lacking. Judging from how the two goals were conceded, it would appear that the fatigue was both physical and mental.
The defending of set plays was poor. In the first half, Bayern twice conceded indirectly from corner kicks. Fortunately, the first instance was ruled out for offside, by the slightest of margins, following VAR intervention. In the second half, the hosts scored a second after Bayern failed to cope with a cross from an indirect free kick.
The only change that Kompany made from the XI that started against PSG was to start Leon Goretzka in place of Aleksandar Pavlovic. Based on the poor showing from Goretzka, this change didn’t work out as expected, but even so, more changes in the starting lineup may have been beneficial.
