The World Cup comes to an end on Sunday as Spain take on defending champions Argentina in the final. Unfortunately for Bayern Munich, no players from the current squad will feature in this final. However, there was plenty of representation from Bayern in Saturday’s bronze medal game of the World Cup.
After losing their respective semifinals, France and England faced each other in Florida for the bronze-medal game. The two sides had to pick up from midweek disappointment to finish the tournament in the best possible way. They ended up delivering a goal-fest as the game finished 6-4 in England’s favour.
Bayern stars Dayot Upamecano and Michael Olise played for France in this game. Olise started on the right flank, while Upamecano came off the bench in the second half.
Olise breaks assist record in a World Cup
After an underwhelming performance against Spain in the semi-final, Olise delivered a much better performance against England. The French team had a poor first half as they found themselves 4-0 down, but they recovered well in the second half as they took the game to England and Olise played a big part in it.
The 24-year-old set up two goals in the second half to lead France’s charge. He created four chances in the game. The French winger could have easily got on the scoresheet, but fumbled two chances in the second half.
With two assists against England, Olise broke Pele’s record for most assists in a single World Cup campaign. He is the first player to have seven assists in a single World Cup campaign.
Olise couldn’t achieve the target of winning the World Cup, but he delivered great performances for France to further cement his place as one of the wide players in the world.
Upamecano’s absence hurt France in the first half
Didier Deschamps decided to give game time to Ibrahima Konate and Maxence Lacroix in the heart of the defense against England. After conceding four goals in the first half, Deschamps quickly made the change and brought Upamecano on the pitch for Konate.
The Bayern center-back delivered a solid performance in the second half and also provided an assist. Deschamps was full of praise for Upamecano after the game, highlighting how he has grown steadily for the French national team.

Kane ends the World Cup with bronze medal
Thomas Tuchel didn’t hand Harry Kane game time on Saturday as he decided to play other forwards in the squad who didn’t feature during the tournament. Kane was an unused substitute against France.
However, the English forward ends the tournament with a healthy goal tally of six. He also has an assist to his name.
