It has been a difficult season for Alphonso Davies at Bayern Munich. The Canadian’s stop-start campaign has come to an end this week as he suffered a hamstring injury against Paris Saint-Germain on Wednesday. Davies is not expected to be fit for the remaining two league games and the DFB Pokal final against VfB Stuttgart on May 23.
As per several reports in Germany, Davies will be out for several weeks. It remains to be seen if the 25-year-old full-back will be fit for the World Cup in June. Canada’s Football Association is in close contact with Bayern to understand the extent of the left-back’s injury.
Davies has managed to make 23 appearances for Bayern this season, but he has spent less than 1000 minutes on the pitch as most of his appearances have been from the bench.
The 25-year-old left-back missed a big chunk of the Hinrunde due to an anterior cruciate ligament injury, which he had suffered at the end of last season. The Canadian returned to action in December, but has been troubled with several minor injuries during the second half of the season.
Davies was a key player for Bayern and Vincent Kompany last season. His presence in the left-back position helped Die Roten to play the expansive and high-intensity style of football that Kompany has implemented since arriving from Burnley in 2024. The Canadian got back to his best last season and eventually agreed to a new contract at Bayern.
However, things have not gone as planned for the Canadian full-back since signing the new contract at Bayern. The Bavarian faithful will hope the latest injury setback is the last for the Canadian full-back and that he returns to his best next season.
Davies is no longer an unsellable player at Bayern Munich
Due to several different muscle injuries in the last six months, there has been speculation around the future of Davies. As per Sport1 (via iMiaSanMia), Bayern no longer consider Davies an unsellable player in the squad. However, with his big salary, injury woes, and the transfer fee Bayern would demand, there are unlikely to be suitors for Davies in the summer.
The Bundesliga champions are expected to strengthen the full-back positions in the summer. Sacha Boey is expected to leave on a permanent transfer after a decent loan spell at Galatasaray during the second half of the season. Raphael Guerreiro will also leave Die Roten on a free transfer.
