Bayern Munich players have left Sabner Strasse to link up with their national team for the first international break of the season. It is a unique international break as it will last for three weeks instead of the usual two-week break. The national teams are expected to play four games during these three weeks.
While the majority of first-team players at Bayern will play for their respective national teams during the next three weeks, Luis Diaz will get a chance to rest and recover. The 29-year-old winger has decided not to feature for Colombia during this international break.
Colombia’s head coach had a discussion with Diaz and agreed to rest him as he has been playing non-stop football over the last 12 months.

Diaz made 51 appearances for Bayern across all competitions last season, accumulating game time of 4060 minutes. He excelled for Die Roten in his debut season, scoring 26 goals and making 23 assists across all competitions. Considering the amount of workload Diaz has endured over the last 12 months, it makes sense for him to take a break over the next three weeks to recuperate.
International break gives Diaz to reflect on slow start to the season
Diaz was part of the prolific attack at Bayern, which includes the likes of Michael Olise and Harry Kane. Unlike Kane and Olise, Diaz has endured a slow start to the new season. The Colombian has scored only one goal in seven appearances across all competitions.
Considering the benchmark he set for himself last season, the output this campaign looks underwhelming. He has also looked rusty in the final third when it comes to getting shots on target and creating opportunities for his teammates. The former Liverpool forward is yet to register an assist this season.
It does look like Diaz is facing the aftereffects of a challenging and gruelling debut season at Bayern. The fatigue from last season and shorter summer break may have a sizeable impact on his performances this campaign.
The three-week break allows Diaz to switch off and rest. It also allows him to reflect on the slow start to the season and find solutions to his problems on the pitch. Bayern and Vincent Kompany will be pleased to see Diaz opting out of the international break, as that reduces the risk of having a senior player injured. This week may help Diaz to rediscover his last season’s form and start scoring goals when teams resume competitive football in October.
