Bayern Munich have started working on the transfer plans for the summer window. The Bavarian club is also looking to define the futures of the players in the current squad. Max Eberl confirmed last week that Nicolas Jackson will be returning to Chelsea at the end of the season.

The Bundesliga champions have identified targets to strengthen in the attack, defense, and midfield. While plans are in full flow to strengthen the outfield positions, Bayern are likely to have a calm window for the goalkeeping department after big developments this week.

According to Sky Sports in Germany, Manuel Neuer has decided to sign a one-year contract at Bayern. The 40-year-old believes he can contribute at the top level for one more season. Neuer was set to make a decision on his future in early April, but he had postponed a decision until the Champions League quarter-finals against Real Madrid.

Bild has also reported that Neuer’s agent was spotted at Sabner Strasse this week to start talks over the details of a new contract. Bayern are keen on extending Neuer’s contract, but the salary could be adjusted for the former Schalke goalkeeper. He is currently earning a salary close to €20 million, making him one of the big earners in the squad.

It will be interesting to see if Bayern will be able to convince Neuer to take a pay cut as they look to trim the wage bill to make space for the new signings.

Neuer’s game time will be reduced next season

As per Bild, Bayern also plan to reach an agreement with Neuer about giving up significant game time next season to ensure Jonas Urbig will play and develop under his wings to eventually succeed him as the number one for Die Roten.

Urbig has made 15 appearances for Bayern this season across all competitions. The young goalkeeper was expected to get game time this campaign, but Neuer’s injuries ensured he played far more regularly than expected. Next season, his playing time will be increased by design.

This is an ideal scenario for Bayern. Neuer is still doing well at the top level. He can contribute on the pitch and help Urbig to develop further. The 40-year-old also has a big role to play off the pitch as he remains the captain and a big leader in the squad.

Bayern will look to conclude negotiations with Neuer in the next few weeks and seal the new contract before the end of the season.
