Bayern Munich have prioritised contract renewals over new signings during the winter transfer window. The key priority for Bayern was extending the contract of Dayot Upamecano. The French defender has less than six months left on his current deal. He will become a free agent at the end of the season.
Earlier in January, Bayern were in advance talks with Upamecano. Real Madrid had dropped interest in the defender and Bayern were cautiously optimistic about closing the deal sooner rather than later.
Bayern reportedly had a framework agreed for a new long term deal with Upamecano. They have also reportedly agreed to insert a release clause in his contract. The only thing left is the final green light left from Upamecano to conclude the negotiations.
Die Roten are getting impatient since Upamecano is yet to give a final confirmation even though the club has agreed all demands of the defender. According to Bild, Bayern have now set a deadline of mid-February for Upamecano to make a decision. The Bavarian club needs a final decision so that they can accordingly plan their summer transfer window.
Upamecano has a great sporting project and quality coach at Bayern, who has managed to get the best out of him over the last 18 months. The Bavarian club is competing on all fronts, giving Upamecano best chance to add more silverware to his cabinet. The club hierarchy will hope Upamecano considers all these factors and make a decision sooner rather than later.
Tah urges Upamecano to sign new contract
Since Upamecano has five months left on his contract, most pre game and post game press conferences are dominated by questions related to his future. In the build up to the game against PSV Eindhoven, Jonathan Tah told media that he has been urging Upamecano to sign a new deal sooner rather than later.
Tah also revealed that Upamecano has helped him on and off the pitch to settle at Bayern. The German defender arrived in Munich from Bayer Leverkusen at the end of last season. Tah has formed a very good partnership with Upamecano in the heart of defense. They have been one of the best center-back partnerships in Europe this season.
Bayern and the Bavarian faithful will hope Upamecano signs a new deal considering his exceptional performances for the club in the last 18 months. He is at the peak of his career, so performances are going to get better. Considering how expensive quality defenders are in the current market, Bayern chiefs will hope that their efforts for contract renewal with Upamecano comes to a fruition.
