After clinching a thrilling 4-3 win against Real Madrid on Wednesday to book a place in the semi-final of the Champions League, Bayern Munich rounded off a good week by sealing the Bundesliga title against VfB Stuttgart on Sunday. Die Roten came back from behind to clinch a 4-2 win against Stuttgart at Allianz Arena.
With Borussia Dortmund losing on Saturday, Bayern needed to win on matchday 30 to ensure they retain the league title with four league games left in the season.
Vincent Kompany made several changes to the starting XI that played against Real Madrid a few days ago. Nicolas Jackson got a chance to lead the line, giving Harry Kane rest after a taxing game against Los Blancos. Jonathan Tah and Dayot Upamecano were also replaced by Kim Min-jae and Hiroki Ito in the heart of the defense.
The visitors started the game strongly, moving the ball smoothly and rapidly in the final third. Bayern were not recycling the ball well, which forced them to defend more often than not in the first 15 minutes of the game.
Stuttgart eventually got their reward for a good start as Chris Fuhrich opened the scoring in the 20th minute. It was a well-worked move by the visitors. Bilal El Khannouss found the run of Fuhrich on the right flank. The German winger smartly slotted the ball past Jonas Urbig to give Stuttgart a deserved lead.
Bayern woke up after conceding the first goal. They looked more threatening in the final third. Jamal Musiala came up with a bit of magic to create the equalizer. The German attacking midfielder got to the byline on the left flank and delivered an inch-perfect cross for Raphael Guerreiro to score the equaliser in the 31st minute.
The equaliser opened the floodgates for Bayern. Finn Jeltsch gave away the ball in the 33rd minute while playing out from the back. Guerreiro found the run of Luis Diaz on the left flank. The Colombian squared the ball to Nicolas Jackson to put Bayern ahead in the game.
Diaz created another goal four minutes later. Goretzka delivered a dangerous cross in the box from the right flank. Stuttgart failed to clear their lines, and Diaz calmly set up Alphonso Davies in the box. The Canadian flicked the ball into the net via a deflection with the outside of his left foot. In no time, Bayern raced to a two-goal lead and took control of the game.
Bayern delivered a calm and composed performance in the second half
After taking the lead in the first half, Bayern ensured they saw out the game in the second half. Kompany gave opportunities to a few youngsters once Harry Kane made it 4-1 early in the second half.
Michael Olise delivered a delightful ball from the corner to find Kim Min-jae at the back post. The South Korean defender’s header was partially cleared by Stuttgart. Kim pounces on the second ball and sets up Goretzka in the box. The German midfielder’s attempt was saved by Alexander Nubel, but Kane reacted quickly to bundle the ball into the net.
Bayern were in complete control throughout the second half. Stuttgart got a consolation goal late in the game, but Die Roten ensured there were no further surprises and clinched a 4-2 win.
There were no loud celebrations from Bayern players after winning the league title on Sunday, as they turn their attention to the DFB Pokal semi-final against Bayer Leverkusen on Wednesday. One title down for Bayern, two more to go this season.
