Bayern Munich made a significant change to their leadership during the second half of last season. After several years of speculation, Max Eberl finally joined Bayern in a director of sport position on the supervisory board. Eberl is considered one of the smartest football executives in the Bundesliga for his great work at Borussia Mönchengladbach.
The German director of sport has played a key role in several big decisions at Bayern over the last 12 months. He helped Die Roten to get a top talent in Michael Olise last summer, while three key contract extensions (Jamal Musiala, Joshua Kimmich, and Alphonso Davies) were completed under the leadership of Eberl.
Despite several positive moves, Eberl’s future has been plunged into uncertainty over the last few weeks after it was revealed that Thomas Muller will leave Bavaria at the end of the season. The record German champions decided against offering a new deal to Muller.
AZ had previously reported that Eberl could be on his way out of Bayern in the summer. However, club President Herbert Hainer has quickly squashed reports suggesting that Eberl is under scrutiny at Die Roten. While talking to Bild over the week, Hainer insisted that there is no reason for Eberl to continue at the club.
Hainer on whether he can 100% guarantee that Max Eberl will stay in charge next season: "I don't know why he wouldn't. Max arrived mid-season last year, we didn't have a coach. Upcoming summer transfer window critical for Eberl
The summer transfer window will be crucial for Max Eberl to make sure he secures his future at Bayern. The record Bundesliga champions will have to spend heavily to find a replacement for Thomas Muller.
Bayer Leverkusen forward Florian Wirtz is the top target for Die Roten. Eberl’s approach to negotiations will be crucial since Bayer Leverkusen are in a good position to ask a big fee for their best player in the current squad.
Wirtz will take up a significant portion of Bayern’s transfer budget for the summer. The Bavarian club will need big sales to address other areas of the squad. Die Roten struggled to part ways with several players last summer. Eberl cannot afford to have a similar summer on the departures front since it will halt the development of the squad.
Eberl has done a lot of good things at Bayern since arriving at the club in February 2024. The Bavarian club does not need another upheaval at the board level. It would be foolish to part ways with Eberl in the summer unless there has been a big fallout behind the scenes. Eberl has not hinted publicly that he wants to leave Munich in the summer. As things stand, he is working with Christoph Freund on summer transfer plans.
