The goalkeeper position at Bayern Munich has been subject to a lot of speculation and debate in the last couple of weeks. Manuel Neuer’s errors against Augsburg raised questions over his form and position in the starting XI.

Jonas Urbig started in the games against Viking and RB Leipzig. The 23-year-old didn’t keep clean sheets in these two games, which resulted in criticism in the media about his performances.

Former Bayern Munich CEO Oliver Kahn is unsure about Jonas Urbig being the long-term successor to Manuel Neuer. Kahn did admit Urbig has delivered good performances for Bayern, but he is not sure if the 23-year-old is ready to bear the responsibility of being number one for the Bavarian giants.

Bayern chiefs remain confident that Urbig is good enough to replace Neuer in the long run. While talking to SportBild (via iMiaSanMia), Bayern president Herbert Hainer defended Urbig and believes he is well placed to succeed Neuer.

"Jonas Urbig joined us as a very young goalkeeper from the second division. He has since established himself as Bayern’s future No. 1 and has already made his first international appearances. Our sporting management deserves considerable credit for this development. He has exactly the blend of qualities needed at FC Bayern: talent, personality and the determination to keep learning every day. "

Urbig has looked the most ready to takeover from Neuer at Bayern

Bayern have signed several goalkeepers in the last seven years with the thought process of them replacing Neuer in the long-term. The likes of Daniel Peretz and Alexander Nubel were younger signings, while someone like Yann Sommer was brought in due to his experience. The Swiss goalkeeper was also signed when Neuer was facing serious injury problems.

Nubel and Peretz never convinced Bayern chiefs and coaches to get an extended run in the first team. Sommer did well as first-choice goalkeeper, but he left Bavaria once Neuer regained fitness.

Compared to these three options, Urbig has looked the most well-equipped player to succeed Neuer at Bayern. He arrived from FC Köln at the start of 2025. In his early appearances for Bayern, he looked confident, and his performances have largely been stable, albeit not extraordinary.

Urbig has already made 36 appearances for Bayern in 18 months, which is a significant number since Neuer is still the number one for the club. It is a considerable sample size to judge his qualities. He has looked assured with shot-stopping and playing out from the back.

The other big reason Bayern are backing Urbig is the fact that he is 23, which is a very young age for a goalkeeper. He will get better with time. Die Roten should continue to protect him. There are bound to be difficult days, but Urbig has shown enough quality to persist in the long term.
