Bayern Munich have no immediate plans to strengthen their options in the heart of the defense. The Bundesliga champions will make a move for a central defender if one of the center-backs in the current squad leaves in the summer.

Dayot Upamecano and Jonathan Tah are expected to stay, while the futures of Kim Min-jae and Hiroki Ito are far from certain. Bayern are not actively looking for offers for Min-jae and Ito, but will not stand in their way if they seek transfer.

Despite Bayern’s relaxed stance in central defense, the Daily Mail in the UK reported this week that they are weighing up a move for Manchester City defender John Stones. The England international is leaving Manchester City on a free transfer in the summer.

Stones has played with Vincent Kompany at Manchester City, which probably adds a little bit of credibility to this report. However, Sky Sports in Germany has quickly dismissed this report and insisted that Die Roten are not looking at Stones as an option for the summer transfer window.

Signing Stones doesn’t make sense for Bayern

Stones has been an incredible player for Manchester City over the last 10 years. He has been an excellent defender and equally influential on the ball. Even though he is leaving Manchester City, Stones can certainly be an asset for several clubs in Europe.

However, there are two big concerns for clubs exploring a deal for Stones. He has endured several injury issues over the years. The English defender has struggled to get game time due to injuries this season. His wages will be considerable, which makes the free transfer deal complex for interested clubs.

Bayern cannot afford to sign an injury-prone player on a long contract. Despite his quality, the cons outweigh the pros when it comes to signing Stones. Bayern would be better served by looking at younger options in the transfer market.

A new center-back may arrive at Bayern late in the transfer window. Kim Min-jae is content with his role in the squad. The South Korean defender is not actively looking for a move. Hiroki Ito looks the most likely departure in defense. The Japanese defender has struggled to replicate his form from Stuttgart due to several injuries over the last two seasons.

The Bavarian club wants to sign full-backs in the summer as Raphael Guerreiro and Sacha Boey are leaving permanently in the summer. Alphonso Davies has also struggled with injuries over the last 12 months, while the contract talks with Konrad Laimer have stalled.
