Bayern Munich moved swiftly in the winter transfer window to sign Jonas Urbig. The young German goalkeeper is highly rated at Bayern. He is currently the deputy to Manuel Neuer. Urbig stepped up in the absence of Neuer during crucial games last season.

Apart from Urbig, Bayern also have Alexander Nubel on their books. The former Schalke goalkeeper has been excelling for VfB Stuttgart during the last two seasons. Bayern offered him a new deal in 2024 before sending him back out on loan to Stuttgart for two years.

Nubel is currently the first-choice goalkeeper at Stuttgart. With the arrival of Urbig in January, there is no vacancy for him in the number one position if this is Manuel Neuer’s final season as first-choice goalkeeper at Bayern.

Die Roten have not commented about their long-term plans in the goalkeeping department. Nubel will have a decision to make next summer. While talking to RTL this week (via iMiaSanMia), Nubel refused to rule out a permanent move to Stuttgart. The 29-year-old is enjoying life at Stuttgart as he gets to play every weekend.

"We haven't had any talks yet about how things will proceed. I think there's still some time. Everyone knows I'm under contract at FC Bayern, but I'm still on loan, and we'll see everything else in spring. I'm super happy in Stuttgart. Everything is going very, very well, and that's the most important thing for me."

The strong performances at Stuttgart have helped Nubel enjoy silverware and get opportunities to play for the German national team. A strong season will help Nubel to book a place in the German squad for next summer’s World Cup in the USA.

Neuer showing no signs of slowing down at Bayern

Bayern have a good set of young goalkeepers on their books, but Manuel Neuer is showing no signs of decline. Neuer has started the season strongly, looking crisp with his sweeping and reflexes in the goal.

The 38-year-old goalkeeper has no plans to return to the national team as his focus entirely remains on playing for Bayern as long as possible. Along with being a reliable player on the pitch, Neuer is a leader in the dressing room. Bayern will take a call on his future in 2026 as they have been extending his contract by a year every season.

The record Bundesliga champions will have a decision to make on the futures of Daniel Peretz and Alexander Nubel. Peretz has gone out on loan to Hamburger SV this season. It does look like he will leave on a permanent transfer next summer. From Nubel’s perspective, he needs more clarity on his future because he is no longer a young goalkeeper. The next summer transfer window will be intriguing to see how Bayern end up shaping their goalkeeping department.
