Bayern Munich have endured a lot of setbacks in the last two summer transfer windows. They have missed out on several first-choice targets. However, Bayern had a good list of backup targets, which saw them get the right profile of players.
The summer of 2024 was a unique transfer window for Bayern. It was the first window for Max Eberl as Director of Sport, while Vincent Kompany had just arrived in Munich to replace Thomas Tuchel as the head coach of the first team.
Bayern moved quickly to beat the competition from several Premier League clubs to sign Michael Olise from Crystal Palace. The French forward opted for a move to Munich. Olise will go down as one of the best transfers Bayern have made in the 21st century. He is currently the best wide player in the world.
The Bavarian club wanted to sign two wide players in the same transfer window. After signing Olise, Bayern were heavily linked with a move for Desire Doue, then at Rennes. While talking to T-Online this week, former Bayern CEO Karl-Heinz Rummenigge revealed that the supervisory board was keen on signing Doue, but the player opted to join Paris Saint-Germain.
"We would have loved to sign him; he would have been a great fit for us. But he chose Paris because he wanted to stay in France. The player would have been a good fit for us in terms of value for money, considering the transfer fee and salary."Karl-Heinz Rummenigge on Desire Doue
Doue has been exceptional for PSG since joining from Rennes. There is no doubt the 20-year-old would have excelled in Munich. He played a crucial role in PSG’s first Champions League title last season. Bayern would have the wide positions locked in for several years if they had managed to sign Doue along with Olise in 2024.
Rummenigge heaps praise on Michael Olise
While previewing Tuesday’s Champions League clash, Rummenigge heaped praise on Michael Olise during his interview with T-Online. The former Bayern CEO is particularly impressed with Olise’s attitude on and off the pitch.
Rummenigge also reiterated the club’s stance that Olise is not going anywhere in the summer. The French forward’s exceptional form has attracted interest from Liverpool and Real Madrid. However, Die Roten are calm about his future. His current deal at Bayern expires in 2029. They are expected to offer him a new contract sooner rather than later.
Olise has scored 19 goals across all competitions this season. The French forward excels in creating chances for his teammates, racking up 24 assists for Bayern this campaign. The Bavarian faithful will hope Olise maintains his excellent form until the end of the season and helps the team lift another treble.
